This piece is my first animation project created during my time in college. The assignment was to take a pre-existing audio track and develop original visuals that would bring the sound to life. Rather than beginning with imagery, the process started with listening closely to the audio. Picking up on the tones and emotional cues in the audio and then translating those elements into visuals. The animation was an exploration of timing, pacing, and visual storytelling, as I experimented with syncing motion and imagery to the dynamics of sound. While it is a beginner work, it represents the foundation of my growth as an animator and marks the moment where I began learning how to shape narrative and mood through the combination of sound and image.
After completing the digital animation, the piece was transferred to VHS and then brought back into digital form for presentation. This extra layer of analog processing introduced subtle distortions and textural qualities unique to VHS. Soft edges, slight warping, and flickers that added a crude and harsh dimension to the work. Presenting it in this way emphasized the materiality of video as a medium and underscored the transition between old and new technologies, highlighting the hands-on, experimental nature of this early project.
